My Thoughts on Psychotherapy

Life is a process, a journey if you will, in which we are all involved at varying stages. As with any journey, our Life Journey was begun with an innocence of what lay ahead, and each day, each step of this journey brings new life/learning experiences. Some are positive, some are negative, but all are intrinsically involved in the shaping of our perception of the world about us. As often happens on a journey, there are periods of excitement and wonder at new things discovered and new people met and loved. At other times there are sadnesses felt for places left and people lost. There may be times of feeling very tired, perhaps overwhelmed by the distances to be covered, feelings of being lonely and in a strange place. It is at these uncertain times that, we often seek help with our journey, be it turning to an old and trusted friend, a physician, or a spiritual source. Or perhaps one might seek a guide, a counselor, who is trained in helping to plan our journey better, to find new alternatives, to explore new directions and to realize the full potential of Self as the traveler. We each have our own road maps, but they can, at times, become very difficult to read and understand alone. This is when we feel the need to seek a guide.
Therapy usually involves one hour of intense verbalization each week. Talking to a trained, impartial, confidential listener can be extremely therapeutic. However, by virtue of my philosophy and training, I view the person involved in this journey as a whole, or holistically, with an inseparable connection between the mind and body. The wellness of one depends on the wellness of the other. Therefore therapy does not involve understanding, learning and growing emotionally alone. It also involves understanding and learning the physical processes that are involved in, or affected by, the life stressors that have led to therapy. Therapy is a teaching/learning and growing process, but also important and “magical” is the insight and sense of freedom that is possible. However, the “magic” requires belief on your part. You will be asked to read and try new experiences, there will be behavioral tools to be used daily, but how much and how far you wish to go is ultimately in your hands. This is your time, I am here to help and to walk with you through this time in your journey.
